  1. The only way to eradicate piracy off of the East Coast of Africa is to make legitimate enterprise more profitable for the pirates. This requires significant investment in Somalian society, which we can't afford. Regardless of what we do to police the region, piracy will continue for the time being.

  2. I definitely think that piracy will continue, especially since the Somalians have just vowed revenge on the U.S.
And we see that they've already struck about 5 ships in one day, so now other countries might start blaming us for the numerous attacks, claiming they are paying for our problem.

Either way, I am not sure if I agree that the snipers should have killed 3 pirates, but we will see where the consequences take us...

  3. It will be hard in order to try to secure the area to avoid piracy. It is just way to much area to cover. In my opinion the only way in order to stop piracy is to arm the boats with some sort of protection advice and take your chances.

  4. I feel that this piracy will continue. It is a large amount of water to cover and there needs to be a better way to stop this. It is a scary situation and also is very dangerous for so many people.

I feel it deserves much attention and should be stopped in anyway possible. The term piracy seems funny to so many people as they did not believe that this is a serious issue, but now people know it is serious.

  5. I also feel that piracy will continue. We look at a country who sees opportunity to steal something. We need better protection for those who are on this ship. We need to take better security measures to ensure that this incident does not happen. This results for anything we decide to carry on a ship.

  6. I think that no matter what policy is put forward piracy will continue. These pirates are people who live without rules and regulations. Trying to put them under some type of restriction will only make things worse. When it comes to these it is possible that people could have guns on board, but then again the pirates do this for a living so their guns are far more powerful.

  7. I think that this problem will only increase. I think it is only smart that we arm every boat that goes through that area for their safety and I beleive we should at least try to help the problem by employing more policemen in the area. We have to do something to help this problem before it is too late.

  8. Arming boats could be a dangerous idea. If a pirate is fired upon, I would think they would fire back. Who would want to work on a ship that may get into a fire fight with pirates? Also, I hear these pirates have large weapons and the ships all carry a lot of fuel. This could lead to dangerous situations that could be worse than what they are today.

  9. In order to help deter piracy, I think there should be as many boats as possible policing the area. Although the area is extremely large and it would be impossible to police even half of it, I think if the pirates were aware of a police presence, it would decrease the amount of piracy off of the Somalian coast at least by some margin.

  10. Even though there are some potential problems with arming these ships because many of them are carrying large amount of fuel which could ignite in the event of a fire fight I still think these ships should have an armed marshall on board to protect the ship's crew. Now that one of the pirate lords, or whatever you want to call him has sort of declared an unofficial war on American crew I think this is more important than ever. At the very least the ships carrying aid and cargo supplies (i.e. not transporting fuel) should have a trained/armed authority figure. If these pirates are going to kill on sight, what chance do Americans have if they have literally zero ability to defend themselves. I am not saying arm them with rocket launchers, but to have even a single hand gun on board with a trained officer would at least have the potential to save American lives.

  11. I think there needs to be some type of policy from stopping from happening again. I am not sure the government acted in the best way when they were unwilling to talk to the pirates. The government perhaps could have prevent so much death even they only were willing to talk to the men.
