Nisha Mathur - Cholera in Zimbabwe (Week 6)

This is an interview by Robert Mugabe, President of Zimbabwe, on December 11th, stating that there is no cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe. However thousands have been infected in the past year.

If it's hard to hear, he's basically saying that other leaders want to start war for no reason.

  1. This was a very interesting clip and presentation. I liked that i could in a way relate it to the assigned reading. This is a scary problem and something must be done to stop it. War for no reason should never occur. I could not imagine something happening like this in the country where i live thus we should do something to stop this in Zimbabwe.

  2. I was very surprised to learn about this today. It is really frustrating to me that there are leaders out there like the President of Zimbabwe. It will be interesting to see how the international community handles this situation. I am concerned that if they just wait for the President to step down before they bring aid that it will be too late for too many people.

  3. I really enjoyed learning about this today because I had no prior knowledge of the topic. I can't believe that Mugabe is disregarding the fact that people are dying from this epidemic. Then again, it doesn't surprise me considering he has been called a dictator before. With that in mind, he is probably primarily concerned with his own well-being and not that of his own people or the neighboring countries. I don't think that waiting for the Mugabe to step down is the best bet. They should have him removed either by force or impeachment because the longer he is in command the more people are going to go without aid for this epidemic.

  4. I know there is a lot going on in Africa but I knew nothing of this epidemic in Zimbabwe so it was nice to learn about it. It seems like Mugabe is bit full of himself as most dictators are. So if the people call him a dictator then he plays the role to the tee. He does bring up a good point. If there is cholera within the country which can be argued, instead of sending military troops more doctors should be sent for aid of the people. Mugabe's impeachment or over through should be the last concern. The betterment of the people should always come first.

  5. I find it really hard to understand that Mugabe is actually denying the fact that many of his people are dying of cholera. It takes a really power-hungry man to be so cold-hearted. This topic was quite interesting...especially when I learned Mugabe refused to step down from office. I wonder who or what could happen that would take him out of power for good.
