Here is a clip from the Today Show interview with Nadya Suleman, mother of 14 children, who just recently gave birth to octuplets. The birth has sparked controversy regarding in vitro fertilization as well as the psychological and financial well being of the children.

Cara,
ReplyDeleteI'm very excited to hear your about this topic. I caught this clip on the news that other day and couldn't believe it. Personally, I think that what she is doing is wrong. She is without a job and going to be bringing 14 children into the world. I hear stories of people who can't take care of one child let alone fourteen!
Although, I think her recent media exposure is going to lead to a lot of donations from people to the point that she will be fine. I think people are going to be generous to the point of helping her care for these babies.
There are two issues here. The children's interests and society's. If the children are neglected they will be taken from the mother. I'm more interested in society's responsibility to the children in the (likely?) event that their current situation will become unsuitable. If our government mandates that society does have some responsibility to the children, this would mean that the mother had some responsibility to society to be reasonably sure she could care for her offspring. I think within the next 100 years, due to the skyrocketing human population, depleting natural resources and the suffering through poverty and starvation these will cause, virtually every country in the world will make the number of children any one person can have a legal issue.
ReplyDeleteI thought this was a very interesting topic. I do think there needs to be laws against this fertilation. I do not think it is fair that we as citizens are going to be responsible for helping raise these children because she will need to depend on welfare. I think a child is a beautiful thing and each child deserves a good home. Unfortunatly I do not think she will be capable of taking care of these children. it is virtually impossible when she has no job and her mother said she contributes nothing to finacially help her family. I think that we should regulate this fertilation because it can only cause problem for the future because these mothers will not be able to support such a large family. I think that each family interested in going through this prcedure should be examined carefully and then they can make an educated decision on whether or not the prospective mother desrves the child or children.
ReplyDeleteTo go along with what Caitlin was saying, there should be some from of screening process to say the least. This woman was not stable enough to undergo this procedure again. Not only because she already has 6 kids and no job (even though that should be reason enough), she does not seem mentally stable. It has been stated that she was lonely in her childhood and she was depressed, etc. So what are her true motives? I do not think they are in what is best for those kids. Additionally, that doctor should also be held accountable because he did this procedure knowing fully well her situation. Laws should be put in place to prevent such situations as this.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the majority that this was a very intriguing topic that I had heard about in the news but was unaware of all the sides to the argument. I believe the most important aspect is the quality of life for her 14 children because based on her current circumstances it does not look very promising. Innocent children should not have to suffer because they are born by an irresponsible woman who does not have enough resources to support them. I wonder if there is any way Child Services can somehow become involved and prove that Suleman in an unfit mother for her 14 children
ReplyDeleteI also think that there should be stricter laws for in vitro fertilization. The fact that she was getting triple the recommended dose is alarming. Women under going this procedure should be scrutinized more carefully (the way parents are in adoption situations). Although there are many issues surrounding this women including her being a single mother, depression issues, unemployed, and six other small children, the media seems to be focusing primarily on her being a single mother. I think it is everyone's right to under go in vitro fertilization once proper approval is given, even single mothers, but 6 eggs seems a bit excessive, especially after already having six kids.
ReplyDeleteHere is a clip from The Factor, Bill gets pretty intense, I would recommend this one:

When I first heard about this topic I thought it was very extreme. Not only is vitro fertilization dangerous but it should be closely monitored with laws, just as adoption agencies do for potential parents. I think it was not only irresponsible, but down right stupid that the doctor allowed a single mother to implant 6 embryos, that already has four other children. Not only that but the women lives with her mother, who quotes saying that she doesn't contribute financially to the family. You have to look at the potential children being brought into the world because there's no way, one or two people can properly take care of her sextoplets emotionally or physically. In her case, she has no right to do this and has no real warrant for why she did it. A low income, single parent shouldn't be allowed free access to vitro fertilization especially when the recommended amount is two at a time and she had six!! Not to mention all the adoption agencies that are looking for healthy families to adopt parent less kids. Whether she felt she wouldn't have been able to go through an adoption agency or if this was a publicity stunt (I think it's this one), either way it was wrong and the doctor should receive some consequences. I read today, she might be receiving over 1.3 million dollars in TAX PAYERS money to raise her kids!!!
