Current Event Assignment (Week Four-Nuri Crayton)

This article is about how the Digital Rights Management (DRM) within the Gears of War video game made the game unplayable for several days. Opponents of DRM highlighted this event as an example of why DRM is bad for consumers. However, proponents of DRM argue that it is necessary to stop piracy.

  1. I think that DRM makes sense for the recording industry. Suing everyone who gets products for free isn't practical, and they probably need to do something to protect their product. In this case, it sucks for those who bought the game, but it's not like their stuck with a game that doesn't work. Surely, the company will be more than happy to replace the defective games with new discs so those who bought the game can play it.

  2. I agree that DRM a way for the record companies and corporations to make money. Because of the years, record companies have lost billions of dollars to consumers getting pirated music and DVD's. Now, even with the DRM in use, people still will find loop holes to get around it. With movies and music being downloaded on the internet for free, consumers are downloading lots of music that they normally wouldn't if they had to buy the entire cd. Even itunes, a legal company that allows ipod users to buy music for $0.99 a song. It allows freedom for people to buy what they like, and not what they are given. So I agree with the DRM but again, I believe people will always find ways to get around the loop holes.
